In 1916 Robert Millikan was the first one who could produce electricity from solar cells. People took the next forty years trying to upgrade the product. No one have any big progress from it. The solar cells they got there were not effective in converting sunlight into usable energy.

In 1950s, the labs from Bell company worked with NASA and came up with usable solar energy platform. The purpose of making it is to power the spacecrafts once they were in orbit. After that, the solar energy science has never been the same.
